Peter L. Faries, MD, joined the division as the Chief of Endovascular Surgery in September of 2002. He received promotion to the position of Site Chief of the Cornell campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital in September of 2005. As Site Chief, he directs the clinical activities at Cornell. Since joining the group, he has continued to pursue his interests in minimally invasive vascular surgery. His clinical practice has focused on minimally invasive treatment of carotid artery disease for the prevention of stroke and on endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysms, as well as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease including renovascular hypertension and lower extremity ischemia.
Active in exploring new treatments for vascular disorders, Dr. Faries leads FDA phase I and II clinical trials of stent treatments for the carotid arteries and of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms. He is director of training programs teaching advanced techniques in vascular surgery at Cornell and Columbia. Dr. Faries currently heads a team studying the impact of endovascular treatment on pressure within abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Prior to joining the Division of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Faries was an Assistant Professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He joined the Mount Sinai faculty after completing his fellowship training in vascular surgery at Harvard Medical School - Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He completed his general surgery residency training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine - Montefiore Medical Center and he received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Dr. Faries has received numerous awards and honors in surgery, including the Lifeline Foundation Award, the Von Liebig Foundation Award of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society Educational Grant, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery Research Award, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons Award, the Bronx Chapter of the American College of Surgeons Award, and the Montefiore Medical Center Young Investigator Award. In addition to authoring over 100 original manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, he is the author of numerous surgery textbook chapters and book reviews. Dr. Faries has presented his research at 200 international, national and regional meetings. He is a member of professional societies including, the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgery, the New England Society for Vascular Surgery, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Surgery Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the New York Surgery Society.
